The shutdown of the economy due to COVID-19 is causing more widespread and rapid dislocation than in 2008/09. As COVID-19 spread in the US, markets were impacted severely in March with equity prices dropping, rates rallying and credit spreads widening. Unlike the previous crises, the monetary and fiscal authorities have been quite aggressive in dealing with current situation. As a result, markets recovered over the summer, with some sectors of the economy (Technology, Financial Services, etc.) recovering fully, while others are still struggling (Retail, Travel, etc.) as the economy is still not fully open. The economy and markets may see further impact as the COVID-19 virus continues to spread across the country, and a second stimulus bill is still pending in Congress.
The purpose of this event is to discuss the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic for risk management. The panelists will offer their perspectives on the impact of the pandemic on various aspects of risk management, and possible evolution of new techniques and processes as a result of this crisis.
