Registration is Open for the 2023 Competition

Be part of an award-winning international student competition. The Risk Management Challenge, a case competition of the PRMIA Institute, empowers undergraduate and graduate students by taking them beyond the classroom and giving them exposure to real-world business situations. The Challenge offers students the opportunity to apply the concepts they have learned and showcase their knowledge, critical thinking skills, leadership, and presentation abilities while competing to win a US$10,000 cash award.

The Challenge begins in December 2022 with an online preliminary round that runs through mid-February. The top teams from that round are chosen to advance to regional competitions, which will be hosted virtually by participating PRMIA chapters in late March. The winners of the regional competitions will compete in the international finals on April 19, 2023, in a virtual event hosted by our global sponsor, MathWorks, where they will present their case solutions to an industry panel.

Students say one of the highlights of their experience is the chance to grow their professional network and gain insight into the risk industry as they meet with students, faculty, and risk leaders from around the world.

Learn more about the rules and structure of the competition in the Program Handbook and view two recent case studies: National Australia Bank and Long-Term Capital Management. Watch presentations from the 2021 international finals by the champions, The Big Four, and the runner-up, Risk Among Us, both from the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto, on their solutions to the National Australia Bank case study.

We are proud to have MathWorks as a global sponsor. Upon registering, teams are given the opportunity to apply for a complimentary license of MATLAB to use for competition purposes.

Student Status

The competition is open to any undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled at the time of registration. Teams may be formed among students from different universities. Each team member must use their university-affiliated email address to show proof of student status.

Area of Study

Students from across any of the following areas of study are encouraged to participate: finance, economics, mathematics, business or commerce, accounting, and marketing. There are no coursework pre-requisites.

Registration

One team leader must register their team of three to four members. The early registration deadline is December 16, 2022 (US$100 per team). The final registration deadline is January 25, 2023 (US$200 per team after December 16). Registration by December 16 is encouraged to gain early access to the case study and additional time to work on the case solution.

Award

The winning team wins a cash award of up to US$10,000 (subject to US tax laws). The top two teams will receive scholarships for the Professional Risk Manager (PRM™) Designation (US$1,430 value per student).

Each team that qualifies for the international championship will receive a one-year PRMIA Sustaining Membership for each team member ($US200 value per student), special member pricing on competency-focused credentialing along with learning and development programs, online risk resources, local and global connectivity to peers, and career building tools.
