COVID-19 Pandemic Preparedness and Enterprise Risk Management

Key Takeaways

The coronavirus both impacts banks' operations and also manifests as increased credit and market risks, and these should be addressed by their ERM processes leveraging the existing risk management tools like Stress Testing and Forward-looking Scenario Analysis. Additionally, a health crisis presents unique operational challenges that often are not addressed by traditional business continuity management systems. Conducting a thorough analysis of specific operational risk scenarios is an important component of a pandemic preparedness plan.  Risk managers can contribute to this effort by leveraging some elements of the operational risk management programs such as scenario analysis, key risk indicators, and the issue tracking and resolution process.
