Recent geopolitical events have only accelerated the incidence of “ransomware” cyberattacks which have become common in recent years. Organizations around the world and across a broad spectrum of industries have been hit with ransomware attacks during which computer hackers break into an organization’s computer network, steal large amounts of data, and encrypt all data files to disable legitimate access. The intrusion is then followed by a ransom demand to extort money (usually in the form of cryptocurrency) from the organization both to regain access to their own data files and to avoid public disclosure of any sensitive confidential information in the stolen files.

Linn Friedman, Robinson and Cole
Linn Friedman is an attorney at the corporate law firm of Robinson and Cole. She chairs the Data Privacy and Cyber Security practice team. Linn is also an adjunct professor at Roger Williams University School of Law and the author of the nationally prominent blog, www.dataprivacyandsecurityinsider.com.

Matthew Ross is the National Cyber Claims Leader at Marsh McLennan Agency (MMA). He is responsible for providing cyber and data breach claim consulting to MMA clients at a national level. Matthew works with insurers to improve cyber claim processes, outcomes, and communications. Matthew acts as a resource by partnering with key stakeholders to develop best client outcomes. Prior to joining MMA in December 2021, Matthew spent over 12 years working as a Claim Director in a high-volume cyber claim environment. Matthew earned his Bachelor’s Degree in English Literature (Secondary Education) from Miami University and his Juris Doctorate from Valparaiso University. He resides in Austin, Texas.
