Our two esteemed guest speakers will give us their insights as to how they feel the future world will look, now that the end of the pandemic appears to be in sight. Both speakers are renowned deep thinkers and modern day philosophers, who always have an alternative take on the world around us. Jim Power will take the lead with an economist’s perspective while John Looby will give us the Investment Management view of the future. This will be followed by a Q&A session kindly moderated by Monika Smatralova and Alan Bluett.

  John Looby
John Looby has worked in financial markets since 1990 in roles spanning fixed income, absolute return and equities. He is currently a Senior Portfolio Manager on the global equity team at KBI Global Investors. A regular contributor of opinion pieces to the national press – now contributing exclusively to The Currency – he is the author of the books: Troubled Times: Investing through the Troika Years, Sixty Shades of Sunday: Investment Thoughts, and Money Mayhem: The Bewildering Consequences of Cutting Money Free. His new book: In Search of Returns: Making Sense of Financial Markets will be published soon by Oak Tree Press. He also lectures part-time at the Dublin Business School.

 
       
  Jim Power
Jim Power is Chief Economist for Aviva Ireland. He was previously Treasury Economist at AIB (1987-1991), Chief Economist at Bank of Ireland Group (1992-2000) and Chief Economist Friends First Group (2000 to 2018).

He is owner manager of Jim Power Economics Limited, an economic and financial consultancy. The company carries out consultancy projects, public speaking, and training for a variety of public and private sector entities. He is Chairman of Love Irish Food. He is a member of the Institute of Directors in Ireland.

He is a graduate of UCD and holds a BA and a Master of Economic Science Degree. He lectures part-time on the MSc Management and the MBA at Smurfit School of Business, UCD.

Alan Bluett
Alan Bluett is Regional Director of the Irish Chapter of the PRMIA, a Patron of the Irish Association of Corporate Treasurers, a Member of the Institute of Bankers and a Fellow of the National Recruitment Federation. For his day job Alan is a Partner and Banking & Treasury Specialist with The Panel (An Executive Recruitment Firm) and has worked with company since 2004. Prior to this he has over 11 years’ work experience within Treasury in Dublin, where he was Associate Director and Head of Fixed Income Trading for RBS. He holds a BComm and MBS from University College Dublin.
 
       
  Dr. Monika Smatralova
Dr. Monika Smatralova is a senior risk practitioner and has been working in risk function of major high street and captive banks focusing mainly on the credit, operational risk management and measurement and Enterprise Risk Management. Her academic background is in ‘Financial Risk Management' and ‘Banking, Investment and Treasury’. Monika is also actively involved in the senior leadership at PRMIA (Professional Risk Managers’ Association),successfully leading the Irish Chapter since 2013. Since 2014, when she was elected, she has been serving as the EMEA Regional Directors Committee Co-Chair. In 2020, Monika was elected to serve on the Global Council of Regional Directors for PRMIA. Monika is also a guest lecturer at various universities in Ireland and abroad and actively participated at many international conferences with topics covering a range of the Risk Management Area.
