ESG Ratings Are Worse Than You Think!
Thought Leadership Webinar: ESG ratings seemingly offer a simple solution to a very complex problem - gauging the ESG quality of a firm. Yet, it would be more sensible to use the term “simplistic." They have so many flaws that ESG rating users should probably start taking them with a grain of salt.
Date:
October 11, 2023
Time:
10:00 - 11:00 a.m. EDT
3:00 - 4:00 p.m. BST
Presented By:
Kornelia Fabisik, CFA, PRM
Assistant Professor of Finance, University of Bern
Session Length:
60 minutes
The webinar will cover all major issues (some of them not yet publicly known) that each user of ESG ratings should be aware of:
- Issues arising from the anatomy of ESG ratings
- Issues arising from the market with ESG ratings (oligopolistic market features)
- Issues arising from the latest trends in the ESG rating design
- Issues arising from ESG data backfilling
- Issues arising from ESG rating selling practices
- Issues arising from the raw ESG data quality
- Issues arising from the incentives in the ESG ratings industry and the pay model
We will also cover the future of ESG investing and talk about sustainable investor types, the trade-off between maximizing firm value and implementing other objectives, effects of divestment, and the fact that “looking green” is not the same as “being green.”
